Help wanted for Southend WWII research

Can anyone please help Dee Gordon?

Hello there.

Although the people of Southend are always very helpful when I'm researching my books, I wondered if it might help me to put out feelers a little further into Essex for one of my next books..

I am researching Southend during WWII and trying to find a Southender who was on active service (or a Southend Land Girl or ARP Warden) but it seems that the people I need may have moved out of the area by now - do you know someone? If you do, I would love to talk to them - wherever they are!

Dunmow Through the Ages - Can anyone help?

We recently received this letter from a Mr Fred Maris, can anyone help him?

'I have been trying to locate a copy of Dunmow Through the Ages by Dorothy Dowsett which has been out of print for some time now (originally published by Essex Countryside 1969). If you can suggest where I might be able to buy one or if any of your readers might have one for sale I would be most grateful.'

A-Z What has been missed out?

With the final installment of the A-Z of Essex published in the June issues it seems like a good opportunity to ask people what they thought was missing. I've already had two people contact me with entries for 'R':

Romford
The town of Romford is known for its 750-year-old market which is still held three times weekly. It also has the recently refurbished Liberty and Brewery shopping centres, attractive parks, including Raphael's Park, and the conservation area of Gidea Park, which was built as a Garden Suburb 100 years ago.
The MP for Romford is Mr Andrew Rosindell, who was born and brought up in the town. He can often be seen out campaigning with Buster, his Staffordshire bull terrier!

Celie Parker also contacted me suggesting the Tudor game of Real Tennis:

A real piece of Essex history is being protected and kept alive at Prested Hall. Our Essex young people are really coming up trumps...we employed a young lad, Ricardo Smith, on a youth opportunities' scheme and notcied he had a talent. He is now ranked number 9 in the world and is training for the world championships. 16-year-old Claire Vigrass from Inworth is seeded no 2 in the world and recently won the US open.

So what do you think? Do you think these ideas merited inclusion? What else was missed out? I'd really like to hear your ideas

I'm a young fundraiser from Brentwood.

I created The Make A Child Smile Appeal in 2004.

I hope that I’ll be able to raise over one million pounds for the Children With AIDS Charity!

We’ve received signed items from J.K. Rowling, Bill Gates and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Make A Child Smile Appeal is distributing small gifts to children on a regular basis.

We’ve sent lots of items to HIV positive orphans in India and Romania. I intend to distribute promotional material to other young people that have been infected and affected by HIV.

We need signed items for our auctions.
